I used to kind of want to be both Marilyn and Jackie (a la the Mad Men episode “Every women is either a Jackie or a Marilyn”). But as I’ve stopped drinking and cheating and generally not taking care of myself I’ve realized that the above is true. We make her an icon because she was tragic and glamorous, but if you read some of her quotes it’s pretty clear she wasn’t happy, that she realized that people treated her the way the did because she was sexy and nothing else, she wasn’t really respected. So why would I want to be like that? I don’t, not anymore I don’t want to be tragic and glamorous, I want to be classy and beautiful, but I also want to be respected and happy.
